Understanding The Liposuction Recovery Process PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 19 December 2006
Advanced liposuction techniques have shortened the liposuction recovery process from weeks to mere days. These techniques have not only made the liposuction recovery process practically painless but also much quicker and safer. Recovery after liposuction depends on various factors like previous medical history, technique used, part of the body undergoing treatment, age and fitness.
Liposuction recovery starts immediately after surgery ends. Here are some things to consider and remember during the liposuction recovery process.

Need for rest:
Liposuction allows a patient to walk just after the surgery in order to avoid blood clot formation. However, there may be some dizziness and it is preferable that the patient has some adult company the first night after surgery. The patient is prescribed complete rest for one week post-op and it is highly recommended that strenuous physical activity be avoided.

Avoiding infection:
The most important part of the liposuction recovery process is to reduce the risk of infection. So, patients should examine their incisions regularly, as these are most prone to infection. Early detection of an infection helps in avoiding severe problems. However, if an infection does occur ignoring it can lead to scarring. In extreme cases post operative infection may even be fatal. The patient should have follow-up appointments from the physician to monitor how well the body is healing.

Reducing bruising:
The post-operative care techniques used by the surgeon often determine the extent of bruising that will subsequently occur. The amount of bruising also depends upon the patient and the area treated. Bruising can be minimized by using the “open drainage” technique in which incisions are stitched with special absorptive pads instead of regular stitches. The open drainage technique combined with tumescent liposuction takes the least amount of time to heal.

Preventing seroma:
A seroma is a possible adverse effect of liposuction. Seroma is a collection of serum (lymph fluid) in a hollow space inside the body. It is caused by the liposuction cannula, as it not only helps in draining fluids from the treatment area but it also makes a large cavity within the fatty tissues. Seroma is more common in ultrasound assisted liposuction (UAL) and large scale liposuction. To treat the seroma a needle is inserted and the serum is collected in a syringe. If the seroma goes untreated in the initial stages it can take months to resolve.

Seromas can be prevented by using micro cannulas, draining lymphatic fluid after liposuction, avoiding excessive liposuction, using compression garments and using the open drainage technique.

Using compression garments:
Compression garments play an important role in the liposuction recovery process. A compression garment is designed in such a way that the liposuction recovery process is safer, quicker and also relatively painless. It strengthens the body to adjust to the extraction of fat deposits after liposuction. A compression garment can assist in reducing the number and size of seromas. It helps in keeping tissues in place and prevents blood clots. A compression garment compresses the empty walls together thus eliminating the cavities.
Speeding up the liposuction recovery process:

Here are some tips to help increase the liposuction recovery rate:
  • Consider a massage therapist in consultation with your doctor for relief from swelling, itching and lymphatic drainage.
  • Drink large quantities of water to prevent dehydration.
  • Avoid alcohol for 48 hours before and after surgery.
  • Don’t resume your normal schedule for at least a week.
  • Take proper rest.
  • Avoid usage of ice–packs, heating pads, hydrogen peroxide and plastic band-aids.
  • Do not bathe in a tub, Jacuzzi, swimming pool, or the sea for a week to ten days after the liposuction in order to reduce the risk of infection.
In general the liposuction recovery process follows the same set pattern of one to two weeks to recover from the bruising and numbness and a few more for the swelling to settle for most patients. The liposuction recovery process may vary slightly from patient to patient and depending on the extent of surgery being carried out.
