Woman weighing 54 kilos dies after liposuction

A 21 year old woman who died in a Dutch hospital after undergoing liposuction weighed just 54 kilograms, raising questions about her need for such surgery.

The woman died from complications arising from the surgery at a private clinic in Utrecht, Netherlands. Following her death, her boyfriend described her as a "healthy, active girl, who took part in sports five times a week."

The woman, from Amsterdam, was said to be unhappy with her appearance and took the decision to have liposuction and breast augmentation surgery after watching a series of TV programmes called "Extreme Makeover" and "Make Me Beautiful".

The surgery was performed at the private Biltstraat Medical Centre in Utrecht, led by a doctor from Aestheticare, a company that had leased operating facilities at the clinic. Following the woman's death, the Dutch Healthcare Inspectorate advised the company not to perform any additional operations until an investigation into the matter concludes.

Although the cause of death still remains unclear, the incident will raise questions about the suitability of such a prospective patient for a liposuction procedure.
