Fashion conscious Iranian women, inspired by western images, spend their money on improving that which can be seen, rather than clothes or cosmetics. Azar Nafisi, the author of "Reading Lolita in Tehran, said: "Every woman likes to be happy, likes to be secure, likes to look good, to feel good, and Iranians are no different." Magid Navab, a plastic surgeon known as the "Michelangelo of Tehran," claims to have performed more than 30,000 rhinoplasty procedures to date. "Tehran — it's one of the centers of the cosmetic surgery," he said. However, the procedure is relatively expensive. In a country with per capita income below $10,000, the cost of rhinoplasty can be as much as $6,000, restricting its availability to the country's affluent middle class. |
