Just an hour after arriving home, the patient complained of pain in her nose, but was persuaded that this was just the normal effect of the surgery. However she was discovered dead by a family friend just three hours later. The low cost of the deadly surgery may have encouraged patients to take a chance with the unqualified "surgeons"; they charged just $94 for the nose job and $62 for the eyelid surgery. In the United States, a combined Blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) and Rhinoplasty (nose job) would normally cost around $7,300, but the mortality rate wouldn't be nearly as high as 25%. The news will come as a setback to Vietnam's fledgling cosmetic surgery industry, coming hot on the heels of the recent sentencing of two doctors from Ho Chi Minh City’s Binh Dan Hospital involved in a patient's death and the more colourful news of a cosmetic surgeon illegally detaining a patient for a week when a tummy tuck went wrong and she tried to contact relatives.
