Islamic Fatwa forbids skin bleaching PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 26 October 2006
Dr Ali Gomaa, the Mufti of Egypt, has issued a fatwa, or religious decree, stating that any women using bleaching creams to lighten their skin are committing a sin.
Although creams that lighten skin colour are widely used in Muslim countries, Dr Gomaa asserts that use of these creams should be considered sinful, since women are attempting to make changes to what God has created. His opinion and declaration is based on a verse in the Koran that talks about the temptation instilled by the devil in humans to change the form that God has created.

The Fatwa was published in an official Egyptian newspaper, al-Gomhuriya.

Dr Gomaa added that liposuction was approved if medically necessary.
