New study offers hope for cellulite treatment PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 19 October 2006
A recent study offers hope of a naturally occurring enzyme being used to treat cellulite. The enzyme, collagenase, was used in a pilot study and reduced the appearance of cellulite by 86%.
The study, by Alexander Dagum, MD, associate professor and chief of plastic surgery at State University of New York at Stonybrook, was carried out over a 6 month period and involved 10 patients. Each of the patients was injected five times with collagenase in a circular pattern at the back of the top of the thigh, an area most susceptible to cellulite in women.

The research team used before and after photos to assess the enzyme's effectiveness in treating cellulite over a six month period. After one day, there was a decrease of 77% in the appearance of cellulite, rising to 86% after three months and falling back to 76% after six months.

It is believed that collagenase breaks down the tissue responsible for the lattice that holds the fat cells, resulting in a dimpled appearance. With the lattice broken down, any subdermal fat will not appear in such clustered, noticeable formations. It is also believed that the collagenase can help break down the fat cells themselves.

The study examined the effects of the enzyme on 10 women with an average age of 41, and an average body mass index of 28, which is classified as overweight. The noticeable side effects reported by the study subjects were some bruising and swelling soon after the series of injections.
