Treating cellulite with caffeine |

Although cosmetic firms have been using the caffeine derivative, methylxanthine, as an active ingredient in firming creams for years, an Austrian lingerie company has taken the concept further - caffeine impregnated tights to treat the appearance of cellulite. The company, Palmers, based in Wiener Neudorf, have spent months developing their new range of Slim Fit pantyhose.
Just like other tights containing products such as seaweed or aloe vera, the caffeine in the fabric of the tights is activated by the body heat of the wearer. Lasting four washes, the tights are claimed to reduce the appearance of cellulite by boosting the user's metabolism and burning off fat. They sell in the UK for approximately $50 for a pack of three pairs.
In tests conducted by dermatologist Mitchel Goldman, 25 of 34 women lost an average of half an inch of thigh circumference after applying a topical cream containing caffeine. The tights are claimed to reduce the appearance of cellulite by activating chemicals that help to reduce fluid retention, temporarily smoothing out the skin's surface. This is particularly important for thigh areas, where skin can become extremely thin and fat deposits more visible.
However, Lisa Donofrio, a professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine, said that there is no scientific proof that the compound works. "Cellulite is a storage pattern of superficial fat," she said, adding that there is no way to evaluate the results of the product since there are no scientific ways to measure the presence of cellulite or its reduction.
