New research by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery shows that 1 in every 5 Americans would like to have cosmetic surgery at some point in their lives. However, only 6% of the population has had a cosmetic surgery procedure to date.
However, the survey isn't all good news for cosmetic surgeons - nearly half of those questioned didn't know the difference between a cosmetic surgeon and a plastic surgeon. (Cosmetic surgeons work on normal structures of the body, whereas plastic surgeons work on abnormal structures of the body, in case you were wondering.)
Other key points from the survey were
- 5 out of 6 Americans believe that personal appearance is key to professional success
- 1 in 5 people would tell only close friends and family that they had cosmetic surgery, while,
- 1 in 3 people would tell only those who asked
- Nearly half of all women would like Jennifer Aniston's eyes
- More than half of all men would choose Nick Lachey's six-pack abs
- Nearly half of the people would choose cosmetic surgery over an expensive vacation or luxury car
- 54% of people would be put off cosmetic surgery by the cost of the procedure, compared to just 18% who were afraid of the pain
