Figures released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) show that nearly 11.5 million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures were performed in the US last year.
The figure marks just a 1 percent increase over the number of procedures carried out in 2005, but represent an increase of 447 percent since the society started collating data ten years ago. The most popular surgical procedure was liposuction and the most frequently performed non surgical treatment was Botox injections.
Silicone breast implants were up 18 percent, reflecting the FDA decision in late 2006 to lift the ban on the implants for aesthetic use. While liposuction was the most popular procedure overall, breast augmentation was the most popular procedure for women.

Racial and ethnic minorities accounted for 21.7 percent of cosmetic procedures, comprising Hispanics (9.7%) African-Americans (6.6%) and Asians (4.7%).
