Arm Lift Surgery PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 09 July 2006
The arm lift procedure is technically known as Brachioplasty in the cosmetic surgery world. Everyone is familiar with the aging of skin and the effects that aging can have on your skin. There are many ways your skin can react to aging such as, losing its thickness and its elasticity. Over time, our skin loses adherence and is affected by gravity in some way and this can result in flabby arms, a problem that particularly affects women aged 40 and above. Consequently, many people are relying on arm lift procedures to return their upper arms to how they looked in their younger years.

The basic advantages of arm lift surgery are the reduction of flabbiness, increase of youthful appearance and improve skin folds in the related area. The doctor begins this procedure by marking the area of excess skin with the patient either standing or sitting. The anesthesia is administered after this marking is completed. Incisions are then made on the inner and under surface of the arm, most often in a zigzagged line. The pattern of skin removal usually follows an elliptical or triangular shape. Often the fat is suctioned at the same time as the incision. The surgical opening may run from the armpit to as low as the elbow.

While the excess skin and fat is removed, the remaining skin is stretched and sutured into place. Occasionally a drain is used to lead excess fluids from the site of incision (known as aspiration), allowing the skin to better adhere to the tissue beneath. The incisions are then bandaged. The patient may experience a moderate amount of pain but nothing unbearable. Your surgeon will provide you with a prescription for analgesic medicines for the first few days to help ease any pain.

Arm lift surgery typically has a one week recovery period but this varies for each and every patient of course. During the first few days after the procedure you need to avoid any strenuous activities, including showering. You may feel groggy up until the seventh day after the procedure. It is important to take it easy directly after the procedure to ensure that no internal bleeding begins and the stitches do not come loose before they are ready to come out.

The complications that can result from arm lift surgery surgery vary with every patient but the main ones include:

  • Reaction to anesthesia
  • Excessive Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Visible scarring
  • Changing in nerve sensations
These complications are not extremely dangerous but any type of complication can become dangerous if they are not treated immediately. Arm lift procedures are very common and these complications are rare but possible especially if you do not take care of yourself after the surgery and follow the surgeon’s instructions.

Avoiding signs of aging is very important to the men and women in society today, especially those in the USA. Aging and appearance are essential in the world that we live in and arm lifts are just a small part of the cosmetic surgery world and procedure options. Having an arm lift done is one of the easy cosmetic surgical procedures available today. The easiest way to remove unwanted wrinkles and those unsightly flabby arms!
