Attorney dies after plastic surgery PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 14 January 2007
A prominent attorney, Kimberley Taylor died of complications following plastic surgery, it has been reported. The 53 year old woman, well known in legal circles in Tucson, Arizona, had undergone a combined face lift and tummy tuck on December 28th, but complications soon arose.
She was immediately placed on a life support system at Tucsom Medical Center, but died shortly thereafter, according to Dr. Eric Peters, Pima County's deputy chief medical examiner.

"We understand she suffered some sort of respiratory or cardiac arrest during the surgery," he said.

"From my understanding, there was not a question of inadequate medical care involved in this tragedy. It looks to be just a very unfortunate outcome," he added. "Anytime anyone goes under anaesthesia for an extended amount of time, there is a potential for a bad outcome, including death. Such a circumstance is rare, but it is a possibility. We understand the surgery was done by a respected plastic surgeon, and we decided there was no governmental jurisdiction."

The surgery was conducted by a well established, board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Armando Alfaro, who has practiced in Tucson since 1983.

Taylor, a personal injury lawyer, had practiced law in Tucson for 25 years at the time of her death, and leaves two grown daughters, from a previous marriage.

Combined plastic surgery procedures carry a greater risk for patients, because of the increased amount of time that the patient must remain under general anaesthesia, with the associated risks that this presents, and the increase in trauma experienced by the patient's body. However, it is not uncommon for patients to undergo multiple procedures at the same time, with combined abdominoplasty and breast augmentation, known as the "mommy makeover", growing in popularity in recent years.

Plastic surgery remains a relatively safe procedure, however, with just one death reported out of every 57,000 procedures, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
