Australia seeks to regulate cosmetic surgery for teenagers PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 05 November 2007
The Australian state of Queensland is considering the introduction of legislation to restrict and regulate the availability of cosmetic surgery to teenagers.
The state's Premier, Anna Bligh, has released a discussion paper on the subject, inviting responses from the medical industry and consumer groups, having heard anecdotal evidence suggesting that many Australian teenagers were undergoing cosmetic procedures. Currently, there is no restriction on the provision of cosmetic surgery to teenagers in Australia.

Ms. Bligh has said that she felt that regulation was needed, but wanted to hear the views of consumers and medical professionals before drafting legislation.

Resorting to a surgeon's blade is an adult response, and it should be a decision that an adult makes. My personal view is I'd like to see this done only under strict conditions and much more regulated than it is. --- Queensland Premier Anna Bligh

Ms. Bligh cited one cosmetic surgeon in Australia's Gold Coast, who is reported to have operated on more than 100 teenagers each year, and said that the rate for teenage cosmetic surgery was growing by more than 5 per cent each year.

A recent survey of 4,000 Australian teenage girls aged between 11 and 18 indicated that a quarter would get plastic surgery if they could.

The discussion paper is an attempt by the government to get one step ahead of it before we do see young women, young people, involved in cosmetic surgery that leads to some serious health problems.
