Australian Plastic Surgeons criticize Cosmetic Surgeons PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 23 October 2006
Australian plastic surgeons have mounted outspoken criticism against rivals who position themselves as "cosmetic surgeons", claiming that the state government of New South Wales has failed to protect patients undergoing cosmetic surgery in Australia from unskilled and inexperienced medical practitioners.
The dispute centers on the difference in definition between medical practitioners calling themselves plastic surgeons and those who choose the term cosmetic surgeon. The former head of the New South Wales Cosmetic Surgery Inquiry, Associate Professor Merrilyn Walton has now suggested that the lack of regulation allows any registered medical doctor in New South Wales to describe themselves as a cosmetic surgeon regardless of whether the particular doctor had any specialist training or experience in cosmetic surgery beyond a medical degree.

Plastic Surgeons regard themselves as providing reconstructive surgery on abnormal structures of the body caused by birth defects, developmental problems, trauma, injuries, infections or tumors, such as skin cancer and breast cancer.

Cosmetic Surgeons provide surgical procedures to reshape or restore normal structures of the body in order to improve appearance or self-esteem.

Professor Walton said that because consumers in New South Wales did not have access to independent reliable information, they were vulnerable to aggressive marketing and advertising by doctors styling themselves cosmetic surgeons. In contrast, Queensland maintains a register of plastic surgeons who must have trained with The Royal Australian College of Surgeons is they wish to call themselves cosmetic surgeons and provide procedures such breast augmentations, tummy tucks (abdominoplasty), face-lifts or nose jobs (rhinoplasty).

"It is extremely disappointing - the medical profession have proved they cannot regulate themselves," Professor Walton said.

However, professional associations representing cosmetic surgeons rejected the criticism, saying that they provided specific training courses in procedures such as liposuction and laser rejuvenation that actually provided them with an advantage over their hospital-trained colleagues.
