Australian soldiers get cosmetic surgery PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 20 September 2006
Australian taxpayers are reported to be fuming as news emerges that soldiers in their army are enjoying cosmetic surgery such as breast enlargements and nose jobs. Official Australian Defence Force policy is that personnel can avail of plastic surgery at public expense for medical or psychological reasons of such severity that it threatens their ability to work.

A Defence spokesman cited the example of laser eye treatments in saying that such surgery was a legitimate way to ensure personnel were able to work. Breast reductions are also apparently commonplace as some female personnel find it difficult to exercise due to their size. The spokesman for the Australian Defence Force declined to reveal how much has been spent on cosmetic surgery.

However, not all are impressed with this use of public funds, indicating that it points to a cultural problem within the ranks. "This suggests a low morale among ADF personnel," shadow defence personnel spokesman Senator Mark Bishop said.

Australian Veterans were less guarded in their comments, branding the defence forces "wimps" and "pretty boys". Vietnam Veterans Association Queensland president Brett Bullians said the cosmetic surgery showed today's soldiers were not as tough as those of his generation.

"We were too busy doing our jobs to worry about things like that," Mr Bullians said.

"We've still got veterans out there trying to get their money for sicknesses and health who can't get a breakthrough, so why are we giving these operations to this bunch of wimps?

"They've got to be pretty boys."
