A Toronto cosmetic surgery clinic says that it is merely responding to growing demand from women in offering labioplasty procedures. The director of the Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, Dr. Behnaz Yazdanfar, says that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of women seeking aesthetic improvement of their genital areas.
"There has been a sharp increase in the demand for this type of cosmetic surgical procedure," states Dr. Yazdanfar. "But it is actually not surprising. There are probably thousands of women in the city of Toronto alone who, due to genetics, childbirth or age, are ashamed of the physical appearance of their genital area. They may also experience levels of discomfort from the laxity of the skin in the area."
Labioplasty, also known as Labia Beautification, is the surgical reduction of the size of the labia majora and/or labia minora. It is a controversial procedure, with critics claiming that it puts even greater pressure on women to achieve impossible physical goals and contributes to some women developing and nurturing a poor body self image.
The procedure is most requested by women after childbirth, who find that the sensation experienced by both partners during intimacy is lessened as a result of the stretching effects of pregnancy and childbirth. Labioplasty can also be requested to be provided in conjunction with a hymenoplasty, a procedure that artificially restores the hymen. Hymenoplasty will normally be only be provided to women who require one for cultural, religious or ethnic reasons, and will rarely be provided to a woman who has given birth already.
