Cosmetic Surgeon walks off Larry King Live PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 22 November 2007
The high profile cosmetic surgeon who had performed a tummy tuck and breast reduction on the mother of Kanye West the day before she died, walked out of an arranged interview with CNN's Larry King, leaving the host and viewers baffled with his behavior.

Previously, the surgeon, Dr. Jan Adams, had given an interview to the Los Angeles Times, in which he suggested that his former patients most likely died from a heart attack, a pulmonary embolism or an accidental overdose of drugs that he had prescribed for post-operative pain. When questioned, he refused to elaborate on why he felt that Mrs West may have suffered a heart attack, but said that another possibility of the death was that she may have overdosed on the potent and addictive painkiller Vicodin, that he had prescribed to deal with her post operative pain.

The LA County coroner's office completed a preliminary autopsy report on Mrs West, but has not mentioned drugs as playing any role in her death. Its initial review was that she died "as a result of surgery or anesthesia."

"I believe I know exactly what happened to her, but I will not comment on it until I see the final report," Adams said. Just hours after giving the interview, Adams then called the newspaper to insist that he had not been speculating about Mrs West's case in particular, but was talking about a hypothetical patient in similar circumstances.

Referring to the malpractice suits filed against him in the past, Adams said,

Yes, there have been some malpractice suits...But 99% of them are what we in this business call nuisance suits...When you look at the suits critically, what you find is those people who sue are those people who couldn't afford it in the first place. And so they're trying to recoup their money and they're looking for anything wrong.

Following the LA Times interview, Dr. Adams abruptly walked off CNN's Larry King Live during a preliminary talk with the show's host. He said that he initially agreed to speak to CNN in order to correct and clarify some of the media's representation of him. However, the family of Mrs West asked him, he claimed, not to appear on the show.

Adams told King, "I want to thank you for this opportunity. Basically, I had come here to talk about things in the press that aren't accurate about me. ... But I have a tremendous amount of love and respect for the West family. They asked me not to go on. And I've said from the very beginning, I don't have a side in this. ... They are my side, and I'm going to respect their wishes. I'm going to apologize to you because I think I'm taking up your airtime, but I will not be on the show and I will not discuss any of that. I'm going to honor their wishes."

Larry King looked bemused and then asked, "Will you ever answer questions ... Where does this go?"

Dr. Adams responded, "I will talk with them. When they're comfortable, then I'll be comfortable. If they're never comfortable, then I'll never be comfortable. They are what's important to me."

In an effort to salvage the show and get Adams to contribute as expected, King prefaced his next question by saying that it wasn't about the West family and asking, "Don't you want to speak out?"

Adams removed his earpiece and simply replied, "No ... I do not," and then walked off the set.

King said that Adams' plane was delayed, resulting in a late start for the taped show. When he arrived, CNN staff told King that Dr. Adams was in the green room speaking to his lawyers and he was not certain if he would go on camera or not, even though the show had already begun and an expert panel was discussing the case with King.

"The whole night was crazy," King said later on CNN.
