Extreme Makeover star defends cost of surgery PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 01 November 2006
Paula Williams, one of the participants in the TV Cosmetic Surgery program Extreme Makeover has defended the huge sums spent by the program makers in providing their makeovers. Ms. Williams, a 42 year old nurse from Swansea in Wales, said that the £44,000 (USD$80,000) spent on her procedures was a small price to pay for the outcome, which for her was a dream come true.
Ms. Williams said, "I think it's a lot of money. It's more money than a lot of people will see in a lifetime but the show is about dreams. And to have that much money spent on you is just a dream come true, it's a fairy tale. It is a lot of money but it comes down to personal choice. If someone's got that money to be spent on them, why shouldn't they."

Mrs Williams decided to go on the show in an effort to boost her low confidence, the result of low self-esteem about her body image. She said that the cosmetic surgery she received has helped her win back her body confidence, which in turn has improved her relationship with her husband, Peter.

"I was really body shy," she said. "I was so fed up of hiding away and being embarrassed. I wanted to take the lead in the bedroom and get sexy underwear and make the first move. I was gobsmacked when I was chosen. I just couldn't believe it. I had this huge grin on my face."

Half of the cost of her extreme makeover went on restorative and cosmetic dentistry, lasting 9 hours of chair time with a specialist cosmetic dentist, Dr Rahul Doshi.

Dr Doshi said, "When I first looked in Paula's mouth I thought this is a person whose teeth don't look that great, who has a problem with the structure of her teeth and who can't chew properly. But we were able to improve the appearance and the strength of her teeth, and so her general health, all in one go.

"By the end she looked so much more confident and better because of it. I was very happy with it."

Ms Williams added, "I'm no raving beauty even after Extreme Makeover but the changes they made are so subtle and softening that I feel they've knocked 10 years off my looks. I have learnt in my job that life is too short to say, 'I wish I had'. If there is something you want you should go for it 100%. If you are not happy with what you've got or the way you look then do something about it and make yourself happy.

"It's a personal choice. I'd advise anyone to think carefully before having major surgery done but at the end of the day if you're unhappy with certain parts of your body, then go for it. I'm still the same person but I'm more outgoing and confident, especially round my husband. Before I kept my clothes on, now I can't wait to get them off.

"After it all we went on holiday to Ibiza and I'd bought a new bikini and he came out of the bathroom and said, 'Where do you think you're going in that?'. He said I looked fabulous."

The other cosmetic surgery procedures that Ms. Williams underwent included:

Breast uplift and implants: £7,000 (USD$ 13,000)
Her breasts were uplifted and implants increased their size from a size 36C to a 36DD

Tummy tuck: £5,300 (USD$ 10,000)

Half face lift: £4,000 (USD$ 7,800)
To address sagging jowls, Ms Williams had a half face lift that pulled up the bottom section of her face giving it a tighter and younger appearance.

Liposuction: £3,000 (USD$ 5,300)

Upper eye lids reduction: £2,900 ($USD 5,000)
To make Ms. Williams' face look younger, surgeons removed the sagging skin which had developed around her eyes with age in an operation that cuts away the loose skin.
