Fake Vietnamese plastic surgeons charged following patient's death PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 13 February 2007
Police in Vietnam have charged two people with conducting illegal plastic surgery after the death of a 52 year old woman who was having a rhinoplasty end eyelid surgery.
"We arrested Huynh Trung Hien and charged him and his girlfriend Hang Thien Kim on Sunday on charges of violating medical regulations," said Hoang Cong Quang, a spokesman for police in Dalat, Vietnam.

The 23 year old pair admitted to conducting 10 such procedures last year, until the death of Tran Thi Rot in November last year. She is said to have died after suffering shock from the anaesthesia used in the surgery. Neither Hien nor Kim had attended medical school.

"People here knew that they conducted surgeries illegally but accepted it because it was convenient and cheap. Otherwise, they have to travel to Ho Chi Minh City for a plastic surgery as no beauty salon in Dalat has the service" said Hoang.

The pair face a prison term of 15 years if convicted of performing illegal plastic surgery. Bizarrely, they will not face murder or manslaughter charges because the death of the woman was ruled an accident by an earlier inquest.

This is the latest in a string of deaths and arrests arising from illegal botched surgery performed in Vietnam. In October 2005 a patient was detained against her will when her tummy tuck was botched and her surgeon tried to prevent her leaving the clinic. In November 2005, authorities began a clampdown on illegal cosmetic surgery clinics operating in the country.
