Flying plastic surgeon apprehended at airport PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 24 December 2006
A New Zealand plastic surgeon was stopped by security officials as he tried to board a Qantas flight with blood dripping from his carry on bags.
Peter Walker, from Christchurch, NZ, wanted to take his medical bag onto the plane, but officials became suspicious when they noticed that there was a "watery blood-like liquid" seeping from the bag. When they stopped him and inspected his bag, they discovered a plastic bag filled with used surgery gowns, blood soaked towels and surgical instruments inside steel trays.

He was made seal the baggage inside a plastic bag supplied by the airline and check the baggage into the hold. The delay and disruption caused him to miss his original flight, but he succeeded in getting on the next flight out.

The incident was reported to a local medical officer, Dr Derek Bell, who said he intends reporting it to the Medical Council, because of the potential injuries that could have been caused to baggage handling or security staff, either from the medical instruments or from exposure to the bodily fluids in the bag. Mr Walker rejected the criticism, saying that the instruments were contained safely inside steel trays and that he always asked patients before an operation if they had any infectious medical conditions such as HIV or hepatitis.
