Harley Street bans cosmetic clinics PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 14 February 2007
Harley Street in London, regarded as the most prestigious location within the United Kingdom's medical community, has banned cosmetic surgery clinics.
Harley Street is one of 3 streets in Central London that form a triangle of medical excellence. The other two streets are Devonshire Place and Wimpole Street. All property in these streets are owned by one landlord, the Howard de Walden Estate, and the landlord can specify what type of tenant is allowed to lease property in these streets.

The ban will also affect clinics that provide abortion procedures, and includes clinics providing euthanasia or cloning, although this is theoretical, since both procedures are illegal in the UK.

"There are still doctors doing certain procedures that we'd rather were not here." said Simon Baynham, managing director of the Howard de Walden Estate.

"So we are steering a course that will restrict them. These doctors have old leases and the policy is new. It'll take time to work such tenants out."

The medical profession in Harley Street employs more than 3,000 people, although not all of these will be affected by the new ban, and those that are affected will not lose their jobs immediately, since the new restriction applies to new leases only, and existing leases will run to their conclusion.

The estate of 92 acres, which dates from 1715, is owned by the de Walden family, and generates an income of £47m ($USD90m) each year.
