Irish politician calls for regulation of plastic surgery PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 26 October 2007
A Irish MEP (Member of the European Parliament) has called for plastic surgery in Ireland to be regulated according to European Union standards.
Fine Gael politician Jim Higgins, said that the plastic surgery industry in Ireland suffers from what he said was "gross under-regulation". He claimed that Irish doctors were setting up cosmetic surgery clinics and carrying out procedures, and referred to claims by one Dublin surgeon who said that he had found himself required to operate on people with wounds from botched cosmetic procedures.

Separately, the Association of Plastic Surgeons in Ireland has expressed its concerns about the Irish plastic surgery industry in a submission to the Irish Medical Council.

Dr. Michael Earley, a leading consultant plastic surgeon at Dublin's Mater Hospital said that there were few members of the Association who had not seen complications arise after procedures were carried out in private cosmetic surgery clinics.

Recently, the Irish Medical Council suspended a French surgeon pending an enquiry into his work and after-care in the field of gastric banding.

Jim Higgins, the politician who raised the issue says that he will now ask the European Commission to investigate cosmetic surgery across the EU and recommend those best practices that should be enforced.
