License of Vegas Doctor Suspended by the Medical Board PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 05 August 2009
On Tuesday, medical authorities unexpectedly suspended Dr. Sean Su’s license before resolving their investigation of his case. They cited that it was because the doctor posed immediate danger after two botched-up surgical procedures and his continuing refusal to take part in the investigation.

The Nevada State Medical Examiners Board, in revealing the decision it made versus Su, cited a breast enhancement procedure that left the doctor’s patient scarred and infected, and the implant bulging out from the surgical incision. Another one the Board cited was that a laser liposuction surgical procedure left the patient’s face scarred.

This action by the medical board happens over three weeks as soon as the State Health Division told Dr. Su to stop carrying out surgical procedures in his clinic after the division discovered him purportedly running a center that is unlicensed and unsafe and utilising expired medicines.

Dr. Su did not collaborate with the investigation of the medical board. The findings of the board showed that he provided falsified records. The order said that the current investigation of the medical board

gives rise to serious and substantial concerns regarding Dr. Su’s competence and ability to safely serve patients in Nevada.

The action occurs two days following the publishing of a story by Sun inquiring why the medical board was so slow on acting on the case of Dr. Su given the actions of the Health Division against him.

The suspension order of the board reported that Dr. Su carried out on April 16 an 8-hour breast enhancement surgical procedure in the Skin & Body Institute clinic. The patient won the surgical procedure via the health club where she was enrolled. Only local anesthesia was used by Dr. Su; the anesthesia’s effectiveness faded, which caused pain to the patient.

Dr. Su was not able to allow for a space that is large enough for the breast implant. On June 3, the patient went to Dr. Su’s clinic and showed to him that her right breast implant was bulging out through the initial surgical incision. Dr. Su carried out a corrective surgery under local anesthetic, wherein he reinserted the breast implant. The medical board mentioned that this implant was still large for the pocket he had made.

The patient then was admitted on June 15 to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center with a right breast infection. The doctors who took out the implant remarked that Dr. Su’s surgical incisions (which are almost 10 cm each) were longer by around five times than they have to be. The order stated that the surgical incision was “jagged and uneven” on the patient’s right breast, and when she went for a surgical procedure, the breast implant bulged out from the cut created by Dr. Su.

The order also stated that the lack of cooperation by Dr. Su with the investigation of the medical board elicits “substantial concerns regarding (his) trustworthiness” and the fear that medical records will be changed or destroyed.

Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie (D-Reno) remarked that the medical board was too slow to suspend the license of Dr. Su. She said,

Reading the health division’s report, it’s clear that patients have been at risk these past three weeks, and I find that very disturbing.
She added that the medical board defends more the wellbeing of the surgeons than of the patients.

The executive director of the board, Louis Ling, stated that the medical board dealt the case of Dr. Su as swiftly as it could. He added that when new policies become effective in October, responding will be a lot faster.
