Modiface allows online before and after photos, before plastic surgery PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 14 January 2007
Researchers at the University of Toronto have developed a novel online application that allows people to upload a photo of their face and see the before and after effects of plastic surgery.
The tool, called "Modiface " allows people to see how their face would look if they had plastic surgery to mimic features of their favourite celebrity's face or to simply change features of their own face. It also provides before and after pictures for people contemplating a facelift.

The popularity of the new tool has overwhelmed computers at the University, with hundreds of thousands of people trying out the free service each month.

The tool was the result of research conducted by scientists at the University in the area of facial recognition. However, one of the students associated with the project identified that his father, a plastic surgeon, could use the technology for his surgical practice.

The system doesn't store the photos that people upload, so users can have fun and see what they would look like with a new nose or a facelift, without worrying that their photos will appear to other users on the website.

The concept of using facial recognition technology is already familiar to many plastic surgeons who use a system called Mirror Image to allow patients to get a rough idea of what they might look like after a particular procedure. However, this is the first time that such a tool has been made available to the public for free.
