Plastic Surgery Sales Sag PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 10 May 2009
Plastic surgeons are no strangers to advertisements and promotions. However, they are certainly ratcheting up the offers now.
Because of the economic situation, and since most people are cash-strapped, they may have to let their breasts, puffy eyes and even flabby stomachs sag along with the economy. One doctor interviewed said that he may reduce his surgical fees even more on his Botox Friday specials. New York Times has reported that 62% of cosmetic surgeons who answered a questionnaire carried out a lesser number of cosmetic surgical operations in the first three months of 2009 compared with the same period in 2008.

However, there are risks involved in promotions such as the one mentioned above. Dr. Adam Searle, who is a cosmetic surgeon in London, said,
It skews the caution of proper decision-making.
This unfortunate situation comes at a time when the cosmetic surgery industry was surging upwards. Americans spent more than $13 billion for nearly 11.7 million cosmetic procedures in 2007, which is higher as compared from nearly 8.5 million procedures in 2001.

The following shows the five most popular cosmetic surgical operations in 2007.

For women (figures indicate the total number of procedures):
  1. breast augmentation: 399,440
  2. liposuction: 398,848
  3. eyelid surgery: 208,199
For men:
  1. liposuction: 57,980 procedures
  2. eyelid surgery: 32,564
  3. nose reshaping: 31,713
