After childbirth, many women struggle to regain the figure they once had before children took their toll. And exercise and diet do not always work, especially after muscles have been thoroughly stretched after multiple pregnancies. How does the average mom get back into shape without breaking their back?

According to David Lickstein, MD, of Palm Beach County, FL, there are several options in treating the body for common post-pregnancy problems including sagging breasts, flabby tummies and excess fat on hips, buttocks, thighs and arms. "Today, there are many surgical options available for treating the aforementioned problems that produce extraordinary results and get women back to looking like they did pre- baby; sometimes even better.

Dr. Lickstein has been treating an increasing number of new mommies with several different procedures or a combination to target problematic areas. These include liposuction, breast lift and/or breast augmentation and abdominoplasty. In women who choose not to have any more children, Dr. Lickstein is finding that many are having cosmetic procedures done while undergoing anesthesia for tubal ligation.

Liposuction is used to remove localized areas of fat from the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks and arms to improve the contours in women's figures which may have disappeared during pregnancy. Liposuction is performed with a thin metal tube called a cannula, which is inserted underneath of the skin to vacuum fat away from particular irregular contours on the body.

As we age, breasts can lose their shape and firmness especially after pregnancy and nursing. With the loss of skin elasticity, breasts begin to sag. Dr. Lickstein commonly performs the Breast Lift procedure with Breast Augmentation to restore volume to the breasts and increase fullness and firmness.

After carrying a baby for nine months, the abdominal musculature has been weakened and stretched, and often does not respond well to exercise. The goal of a narrower and flatter tummy can be achieved through Abdominoplasty, which removes excess skin and forms an internal girdle to improve the abdominal contour. Loose stretched out muscles are tightened with stitches and excess skin and fat are removed. Many post-pregnancy patients favor the mini-abdominoplasty which tightens the lower abdominal wall and results in a much shorter scar.

Doctors advise women to wait until they have finished breast feeding and reached a stable weight before undergoing any plastic surgery procedures. Many also wait until after the birth of their last child. "Plastic surgery may not be for every woman, but for the right candidate it can fix what diet and exercise can't ultimately accomplish."
