Scalpel Safaris bringing tourists to South Africa for liposuction PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 28 November 2006
The medical tourism in South Africa continues to boom, with new figures showing that the number of patients visiting the country for surgery has more than doubled in the last three years.
The medical tourism sector is worth $37 million each year, according to Martin Kelly, President of the Association for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons in South Africa. Forecasters predict that this is set to increase even further, with an expectation that 20,000 patients will have travelled to South Africa for what have been dubbed "scalpel safaris". This compares with just 8,000 patients who visited in 2003, reflecting the increasing willingness of patients to travel overseas and the increasing sophistication of medical facilities in the country.

"South Africa has a very good reputation internationally for the quality of its medical service facilities and because it's cheaper," Kelly said.

However, research by Lipo.com points to a narrowing of the price difference for common procedures in the last year. Whereas, until recently, the total cost of the procedure in South Africa, air travel and accommodation would still cost significantly less than in the United States or Europe. The Lipo.com price index for procedures in 2005 shows that this price gap has narrowed and South Africa is no longer the bargain basement location that it once was.

Procedure US Price (2005) USD$South African Price (2005) USD$
Breast Augmentation4,3005,700
Rhinoplasty4,1004,300
Upper & Lower Eyelids3,4003,000
Full facelift6,4008,000
Liposuction (1 area)3,3003,500

For many patients, the incentive to travel is not just the cost saving for plastic surgery, but also the opportunity to combine the procedure with a vacation. Although it is unlikely that patients recovering from a tummy tuck or liposuction will be bouncing about on the beach after the surgery, the vacation period allows patients the opportunity to recover in privacy, so that swelling and bruising from the procedure will have subdued by the time they return to family, friends and colleagues.

However, patients should be aware of the risks of travelling for overseas surgery, as outlined in this article.
