The UK's public medical service is to stop providing free sex change operations in order to save funds and reduce waiting times for other operations.
The announcement was made by Hounslow Primary Care Trust, saying that from April 2007, medical procedures such as gender reassignment, tattoo removals and breast enhancements will not be provided free of charge. It is hoped that the cutback will free up resources for other medical procedures and cut back on the length of time that patients must wait for a publicly funded operation.
The move by UK authorities is in contrast with the decision by San Francisco city authorities to provide free sex change operations to municipal authorities, and the decision by New York to allow citizens to change their desired gender without undergoing surgery .
