Vietnamese authorities clamp down on cosmetic clinics PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 03 November 2006
53 cosmetic surgery clinics in Ho Chi Minh City are under investigation by health authorities in a clampdown on premises that are potentially unlicensed or operating with unqualified personnel.
The investigations follow the shocking discovery of an unlicensed clinic operating in the city, whose owner is accused of detaining a patient against her will for a week when a tummy tuck procedure went wrong.

Nguyen Van An, head of inspection at the health department, said that inspectors have already discovered four clinics that advertised their services in the local media without prior approval by the Department of Health.

The clampdown began after the health authorities found that Nguyen Xuan Ai, owner of two cosmetic surgery clinics in Ho Chi Minh City, was in breach of city regulations. He is suspected of altering his medical degree certificates, since the degrees were supposedly issued at a time when universities were closed, at the end of the Vietnam war in April 1975.

Current Vietnamese regulations limit private clinics to performing cosmetic surgery on the face from the chin up only, including nose lifts and double eyelids.

Any other procedure, including the tummy tuck allegedly provided by the accused doctor, can only be conducted by surgeons at fully equipped and licensed hospitals, such as FV Hospital or Cho Ray Hospital.
