Press reports speculate that Britney Spears had a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) after giving birth to her second chid, Sutton Pierce. While a combination of childbirth and subsequent tummy tuck may seem extreme to all but celebrities in the public gaze, the procedure sheds light on the growing demand for "mommy makeovers".
New research published in the journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery lends support to the safety of multiple surgical procedures conducted in one operation. After pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding, many women are opting for a "mommy makeover" - a double procedure that combines breast augmentation with a tummy tuck. Out of 415 tummy tuck operations that were conducted at Marina Plastic Surgery Associates in California, 151 of these patients underwent simultaneous breast surgery, with no increase in complication rates.
While previously, women opting for a "mommy makeover" would be advised to have the breast augmentation procedure at a different time to the tummy tuck, the lack of complications during the combined surgery procedures should be of comfort to women seeking to restore their youthful figure in one operation. The additional advantage of the combined mommy makeover is that the body is less stressed from a single dose of general anesthetic, than it would be for separate anesthesia for both operations.
