Cosmetic Surgery Vacations - Vietnam off the list PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 05 October 2006
A patient at a cosmetic surgery clinic in Vietnam was illegally detained for nearly a week until being rescued by police and health officials.
The 32 year old patient checked in to the clinic in Ho Chi Minh City for a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), expecting the procedure to last 2 hours and cost just 21 million Vietnamese dollars (c. US$1,300). However, after reconsidering her decision to undergo the procedure and asking to leave, the patient claims that the doctor in charge kept her there against her will.

According to the patient, Doctor Nguyen Xuan Ai, owner of the clinic, then decided to carry on the procedure, bypassing normal pre-operative tests and leaving the patient with an open abdominal incision. Throughout her ordeal, the center did not allow her relatives to visit or contact the patient, she said.

According to Phan Kim Binh, an inspector from the municipal health department, such ‘beautification’ centers are not licensed to perform abdominal surgeries., instead being licensed to conduct facelifts and tattoos and being permitted to offer services over a period of 24 hours per patient, said the official.

At the time of going to press, it was unclear as to whether the surgical center charged the patient for the extended duration of her stay.
