Woman dies after abdominoplasty PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 20 February 2007
A 39 year old woman died from a blood clot after undergoing plastic surgery for a tummy tuck, an inquest in the UK has ruled.
Julie Gore, from Northamptonshire, had been admitted to Park Hospital on November 14th for the routine procedure. She was discharged normally two days later, but three days after returning to her home, she complained of feeling unwell and was rushed to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre, where she died.

The inquest heard that the cause of death was a pulmonary embolism, or a blockage in her pulmonary artery, caused by deep vein thrombosis. The blood clot had formed in Mrs Gore's leg, where it continued to increase in size. It then broke away and travelled in her blood system until becoming lodged in the pulmonary artery blocking the flow of blood from the heart to the lungs.

The death rate from a pulmonary embolism following plastic surgery is estimated at one in 10,000.

The surgeon who performed the procedure, Stephen McCulley, told the inquest that she had sought the procedure because of an overhang on her abdomen, following recent weight loss. He agreed to perform an abdominoplasty after telling her that she would need to quit smoking and improve her fitness and mobility level prior to the surgery. At the time of the assessment, she was relatively immobile, because of a plaster cast on a broken foot.

The abdominoplasty itself was a success, and Mrs. Gore was mobile the day after the procedure. She had been given compression socks, worn to prevent the development of deep vein thrombosis.

The pathologist explicitly cleared the surgeon and the hospital of any responsibility in Mrs Gore's death, saying: "There is no evidence of anything wrong with the operation. It was healing well, as it should have been."

How unfortunate, I just had an abdominoplasty performed yesterday afternoon and after reading this article I feel the need to move around. Painful as it seems it's better then dying.
