County office offers free weight loss surgery to employees PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 26 September 2006
A County Office in Texas is to offer gastric bypass surgery to employees in a bid to help them to lose weight. The County commissioners believe that the pilot program could save money in the long run, through lower absentee and medical insurance costs.
The pioneering program will pay for up to fifteen bariatric surgeries per year over a five year trial period. The procedures will cost between $15,000 and $25,000 each. To qualify, employees have to be diagnosed with morbid obesity and go through a year of supervised unsuccessful dieting and exercise. If the employees fail to reduce weight below the level of morbid obesity, they will qualify for the surgery.
"Unfortunately, the program is obviously very needed," Travis County Judge Sam Biscoe said. "We do have more than our fair share of employees who qualify." The County estimates that nearly 10% of its employees may qualify for the program.

The County officers believe that since they are self-insured for medical costs, the program may reduce costs incurred as a result of employees suffering from the effects of morbid obesity. However, Susan Smith, executive director for the Texas Municipal League's Intergovernmental Employee Benefits Pool, said that Texas cities that have covered bariatric surgeries to date found them to cost more than anticipated.

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimates that 60 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. It says weight-loss surgery has been found to help with conditions such as diabetes, asthma and hypertension.
