Dominican doctor charged with patient's death in gastric band surgery |

Franklin Hasbún Rodriguez, a surgeon who operated out of the clinic Otorrinolaringología & Especialidades in the Dominican Republic, was charged yesterday with involuntary homicide.
The charges were brought by the husband of a woman who died shortly after undergoing weight loss surgery at his clinic. Rodriguez has been banned from making any attempt to leave the country and bail was set at 500,000 pesos ($15,000 USD).
The dead woman, Sonia Margarita Mañaná, died on November 30, 2005 in San Pedro's Oncológico medical center, just a day after undergoing a gastric band procedure conducted by Rodriguez. Her husband, Abner Bernardo Virgilio Gomez, a U.S. citizen, alleges that the doctors and clinic personnel did not use the correct technique for the gastric band operation, and that they incompetent and negligent during the procedure, for which Rodriguez was paid $6,500.
