Drink red wine and lose weight - new study PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 18 November 2006
Researchers claim that a substance that is naturally occurring in red wine can help people lose weight and cut the risk of developing diabetes.
The substance, called resveratrol, is said to activate a "longevity gene" and helps people shed weight and develop a higher tolerance for exercise, according to the study published in the journal "Cell" by Sirtris Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Prof Johan Auwerx at the University Louis Pasteur.

Unfortunately, the level of resveratrol in red wine is so low that it is not particularly effective in promoting weight loss.

“You would need to drink hundreds of glasses of red wine or take hundreds of pills of nutraceutical products per day,” said Dr Christoph Westphal, CEO of Sirtris.

Using studies of diabetic mice, animals on high levels of resveratrol were able to exercise twice as long as the control group (not taking resveratrol), lost weight and became more sensitive to insulin, thereby reversing their diabetes. In addition, researchers found that mice on a high calorie diet given chronic low doses of the compound resveratrol were lived substantially longer because the chemical boosts the activity of sirtuins — proteins that help defend cells against damage and illness associated with old age.

Because resveratrol is found in red wine, it might explain why the French are relatively healthy despite their high fat diet. Chronic exposure to low levels of resveratrol “could very well explain the French Paradox,” said Prof Auwerx.
