Lose weight without exercise - study PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 26 February 2007
A study of weight loss methods has concluded that dieting alone is as effective as dieting plus exercise for people trying to lose weight.
The authors of the report base their conclusion on the established principle that weight loss can only occur if an individual consumes less calories than he or she uses each day. However, contrary to popular belief, they say that it does not matter if the differential in calories occurs through dieting alone or through increasing the number of calories burned through exercising.

“For weight loss to occur, an individual needs to maintain a difference between the number of calories they consume everyday and the number of calories they burn through metabolism and physical activity,” said Dr. Leanne Redman of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

“What we found was that it did not matter whether a reduction in calories was achieved through diet or burned everyday through exercise.”

The study monitored thirty five overweight but otherwise healthy adults over a six month period. Twelve of the participants were assigned to a diet-only group and reduced their calorie intake by 25%. Twelve others were assigned to a diet plus exercise group, who reduced their calorie intake by 12.5% and increased their exercise by 12.5%. The remaining 11 were in a control group that made no significant diet or exercise changes.

On completion of the study, Redman and her colleagues found that the diet-only and diet plus exercise group had lost roughly equivalent amounts of weight, about 10% of their body weight, 24% of their fat mass and 27% of their abdominal fat. The study concludes that for weight loss, diet or exercise will deliver equivalent goals, but they also point out that regular exercise will improve fitness levels and reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

The study also found that, among the diet plus exercise group, fat reduction was consistent across the whole body and that exercise did little to target any particular trouble spot of the body.

“Our study then would indicate that weight loss cannot override the way in which any individual stores fat. Perhaps an apple will always be an apple, and a pear, a pear,” Redman said.
