When she applied for the operation to be provided for free, she was told by public health officials that she would have to attend a year-long diet program before she would be eligible for surgery. Ms. Brown maintains that this is unfair and that she will suffer for the 12 months while awaiting the procedure. She previously lost 12 stone when prescribed weight loss medication by her doctor seven years ago, but has since put the weight back on, doubling in size. The policy surrounding public provision of gastric bypass surgery in Scotland differs from that in England, where the recommendation is that anyone with a Body Mass Index greater than 40, should automatically be considered for surgery. Scotland is battling with a growing obesity epidemic, and lifestyle choices are considered the greatest contributor to this trend. Glasgow, its largest city, is famed for providing diners with deep fried pizza and deep fried chocolate candy bars, among other gastronomic delights. |
