One third of Americans use supplements to lose weight PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 11 November 2006
A University of Connecticut report published yesterday concludes that just over one third of Americans who were trying to lose weight turned to supplements to reach their goal.
The survey of 3,500 people found that 90 per cent of people trying to lose weight relied on taking more frequent physical exercise, 72 per cent tried to control their weight by adjusting their diet, and 34 per cent used supplements for weight loss. 15 per cent of people hoping to achieve weight loss used prescription drugs.

Surprisingly, 40 per cent of obese people said that they had never been advised by their doctor to lose weight, and many people said that they would not approach their doctor if they were seeking to lose weight.

65 percent of US adults are overweight or obese, and therefore have a high risk of health problems such as hypertension, type-2 diabetes and heart disease.

However, Americans are not very well informed about the statutory control of dieting supplements. 64 percent of those surveyed thought that dietary supplements are required to print warnings about potential side effects when actually there is no such obligation on supplement manufacturers.

Dietary supplements need no pre-market approval by the FDA and therefore can be sold quite freely before any side effect problems can be brought to the attention of federal authorities.
