Supermodel starves to death PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 17 November 2006
The fashion world was shocked this week to learn of the death of 23 year old Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston.
Ana, who had modelled for leading designers such as Giorgio Armani, lost her battle with anorexia, weighing just 88 pounds, although 5 feet and 8 inches tall. Towards the end of her life she would only eat tomatoes and apples. Finally, she had to be hospitalized because of a generalized infection.

Her death comes just two months after the death of fellow Brazilian model Luisel Ramos, who died of a heart attack just moments after stepping off the catwalk in September. Her death prompted Spanish authorities responsible for Madrid's fashion week to ban the use of models considered dangerously underweight. Models were examined by doctors and those with a dangerously low BMI (Body Mass Index) were not permitted to take part in the show.

However, fashion designers do not seem to be bothered by the controversy, with Banana Republic and Nicole Miller about to introduce new "sub-zero" sized fashions for women this fall.

Erin, don't forget about this "Privacy Act" rubbish. Her family, most likely couldn't help her, as much as they would have wanted to. nobody can be hospitalised against their own will, unless deemed incompetenmt mentally. Even he, it is a long process. Guardianship has to be slapped on the person, (which is not easy), and then maybe something can be done to help. That is if the guardian is agreeable. Guardians could be almost any adult. Stranger or a member of the family. If no near family, usually it is somebody from a govenrment body.

That is just horrible. I am sorry to her family and by know means do I blame them. We are responsible for our own lives and choices in life and shame on anyone who blames others for there own actions! There family can't help if the poor girl didn't want it. Maybe you shouldn't pass judgement on the family before understanding and reading more on the situation. It is people like you that hate before you know anything. I again am sorry for the family and will pray for you all.
GOD BLESS!

What a waste. Pity her family didn't step in to have her hospitalized and her condition (anorexia) treated.
