Weight loss drug ads banned PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 27 February 2007
Adverts for Xenical, Roche Pharmaceutical's weight loss drug, have been banned in Australia because the regulator fears that they may encourage use by people who should not be using the drug.
It is the second blow for the company's drug in this country, having already been denounced by the regulator for using TV adverts that failed to disclose that it was recommended only for people with a body mass index greater than thirty.

Xenical is currently the market leader for weight loss products sold in pharmacies, with a quarter of the market. The company's managing director, Fred Nadjarian, has said that the company will not appeal the decision, and predicted that sales of the product will now drop off.

"There are probably other options open to us but we aren't going to pursue them," he said. "We are out of energy on this. If there was another body to whom we can appeal to then we might, but as it's the same body of people it's unlikely."

The weight loss product will still be available for consumers to purchase in pharmacies, but the advertising ban will diminish consumer awareness of the product and the claims made by its manufacturers.

"We won't be able to advertise yet products with dubious ingredients largely based on green tea extract, eye of newt, wing of bat and guinea pig tails can," Mr Nadjarian said. His comment is thought to be a criticism of some of the complementary medical weight loss products such as "Fatblaster", which will be unaffected by the ban.
