The study, led by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, will look at the results of four hospitals providing laparoscopic gastric banding to children, noting the success of the procedure in achieving weight loss, the long term effectiveness of gastric banding in achieving sustainable weight loss, and any side effects or safety issues associated with gastric bands for children. A previous study conducted by New York University Medical Center looked at the outcome of gastric banding surgery for 53 children aged between 13 and 17. The New York study found that patients who had undergone the gastric band procedure were successful in losing half of their target weight loss over an 18 month period. Children will only be considered for a gastric band procedure if they have already spent at least six months on an approved diet and exercise regime, which has not been successful in reducing their body mass index sufficiently. |
