UK Government acts to curb unregistered clinics

In the UK, Health inspectors are to conduct undercover investigations into unregistered clinics offering cosmetic surgery and Botox procedures. Inspectors from the Healthcare Commission (HC), the British  government's health watchdog, have been granted powers by the UK parliament to monitor the estimated 3,000 unregistered clinics that use laser and light therapy to carry out operations such as removing facial hair, tattoos and giving Botox injections.

It is illegal to operate an unregistered clinic and any such businesses have been warned that if they do not apply for registration, the commission can apply for an injunction to stop it from operating. It may also face criminal prosecution.




Cosmetic Surgery on the rise in the UK
The number of people in Britain taking control of their body shape by undergoing cosmetic surgery continues to rise. Almost 700,000 cosmetic procedures will be performed in the UK this year, at a cost of £539m, according to a recent survey.




Average breast size growing in the UK
The average size of women’s breasts have been rising, with sales of large bra sizes tripling over the last three years. A new report from British lingerie frim La Senza indicated that there has been a 30 per cent increase in demand for bras with cup sizes of DD and above since 2003. Whereas 10 years ago, the most popular bra size was a smaller 34B, the average bra size in the UK today is 36C.

As if there weren’t enough pressures in life for schoolchildren, it transpires that at least 40 girls in Scotland under the age of 18 have had operations on the National Health System to enlarge or reduce their breast size in the past five years. In addition, 21 youngsters have had surgery on their noses (rhinoplasty) while more than 520 children have had prominent ears pinned back (pinnaplasty).
